Here a Chick, There a Chick, Everywhere a Chick-Chick

Each Spring about one dozen eggs are delivered to each first grade class at MSE. They incubate for a week or two and then, they hatch. As they pop out bravely and stare in innocence and wild-eyed wonder at this huge new world, they are abruptly treated to a "meet and greet" with about 20 wild six year olds who have been anxiously awaiting their arrival. The kids name them, make "Happy Birthday" signs for the cardboard box that has been set up as their temporary home and hold, pet and cuddle them for about a week before they are shipped back to the farm. So as if these guys have not already been traumatized enough by living in a first grade classroom- I took John Riley up to the school today before his nap to look at Pam and Natalie's chicks. He loved them and adored them so much that I had a flashback to my majoring in English days. Was it Of Mice and Men where Lenny killed the pet he loved so much by petting it because he didn't realize how strong he was? John Riley wanted to hold the chicken and pet the chicken but after being told repeatedly "Don't hold him around the neck," and "Pet him with one finger gently not your whole hand"; We decided that it was in our best interest to head home or even Colonel Sanders would seem like a better alternative than another few minutes with John Riley to these feathered friends.
